Your CDI should be fed with 12V - I don´t know how much you can measure on kicking, but it should be about that. Starting is easier with turned off lights etc, cause the voltage can only be used for the ignition. But the aftermarket CDI don´t has the anti-kickback programmed, so I cannot help you with that. Probably a small battery can reduce the problem, but I´m not sure. Kicking fast will be good as well. The best thing was on the old XT and TT Models with double pick-up coil which calculated on low rpm to fire the spark very late and it couldn´t kick back! It´s not available anymore and you cannot change the parts - they will not fit!!

I did some Ω testing and got some results.

Starting from the top.

Spark plug cap resistance
4.53kΩ
Manual suggests 10kΩ so I changed it with one that reads 10.57kΩ

Ignition coil winding resistance:
Primary 1.3Ω
Secondary 19.7kΩ

Pickup
247Ω

Generator/stator winding resistance
(In this configuration) [3][2]
[1]

1->2 0.9Ω
1->3 0.8Ω
2->3 0.9Ω

Everything apart from the spark plug was within specifications.
Not 100% sure about the generator/stator resistance, however my spare had the same values.

I am going to buy a new spark plug today just for the sake of it, will spend a bit of money and buy an iridium plug. Not 100% sure, but people online say it is better for low power.
Really want this bike going, and all problems appear to lead back to the CDI.

The values seem to be fine. Coils are not optimitized for measuring the resistance with simple instruments. So you should try running the bike with the battery. You can also remove plug of the regulator for one testing ride.
The spark plug resistance is for filtering electric noise of the ignition. I drive my old TT with a plug without resistance.

I took off the capacitor and put a battery on, it made no difference to starting. I have no lights on and I don't touch the front brake.

The original CDI did not spark
And the aftermarket HPI ignition CDI's kept on kicking back!
The aftermarket CDI units have a sticker saying to use a Resistor spark plug and a resistor spark plug cap.

I have no idea what to do next.
I think I might look into the ignitech CDI units, only problem is that I am in Australia!

I go to university and I do not have much money to spend on bloody CDI boxes. :(

Give us more details about what your problem is... TTR? ... original... modified...repared?
Did it run before or you just don't get it to start?

I had the problem a week ago (first time since I owned my '98 TTR) after the engine had been apart... no start.
Checked the plug, the coil and the kill switch... but it was a switched connector near the coil. My fault!!
Then it started on the second kick. :!:
